I have a Kindle. Got it for Christmas. I love it more than anything in my house right now. I know, bold statement. But true. Even more than food. It's almost noon and I haven't even ventured downstairs to shove my face. I'm not sure there's even anything down there to eat. But I have finished a book and bought me the next in the series with "one click." Amazon Kindle, you are going to make me broke - out of money, out of time, out of living in the real world. And I am so, so happy about it.

My Sweet, Sweet Kids

So, it's been an incredibly long time since I've written on this blog. I'm not sure why. Guess life got busy and I got tired of looking at computer screens. But it's winter again and now I write to pass the time and keep me sane until Spring brings back my sanity.

What am I thinking about today? My sweet kids. The ones that fill my days. The ones that seek me out when I walk into a room. They come to hug me or say hi. They ask for me to play by taking my hand and pulling them somewhere fun. They calm down when they're upset. And I was thinking how lucky I am to have God really direct me all the time there. The things I hear in my heart are soft, but powerful - and they lead to children trusting me and looking to me for more support. I have come to understand so much of life in the eyes of these kids. I see what real happiness is - in relationships that attend and cultivate according to the mutual pacing and interests of two very individual souls. I see what patience is - merely trying to understand what the other is actually experiencing. I see what pain is - and how the only way to relieve it is to stop thinking about yourself. I see what true growth is - a step by step by step process of trying. Again and again.

Anyway, today I'm thinking about my kids. And how very lucky I am to know them and fill my days with their love. :) And for now, that's all that matters.

So my Mom's been going through all this stuff and sending me little quotes from old journals and stuff. Here's one of the latest:

Stephanie had a dream: "Mom and Dad were out to dinner and Matthew was asleep in bed and Jesus came. When he had to leave I kissed and hugged and kissed and hugged him. I thought he was really there but I guess it was just a dream."

Kind of sweet, huh? It reminds me of the song below. My Bishop's daughter sang it for us in church a couple Sundays ago while I played the piano for her. I cried while playing 'cause it was just so darn sweet. Anyway, just a tender little moment tonight and thought I'd share. The MoTab is singing a version of it, but think of a beautiful young girl singing it over the pulpit and you might cry, too.

So, I appreciate the comments on my last blog post. I especially appreciate those that have been positive. Words of hope are always a blessing. Just like everyone else, you never truly know what someone is dealing with and I appreciate those who were sensitive to that. I also appreciate the feedback that was given with good intentions. I will take this information as best I can and try to live up to your expectations. I apologize that you feel the way you do about me. It proves to me I have much longer to go.

Anyway, it's funny how feedback tends to come in particularly difficult moments. But I'm lucky because when my soul was frustrated by it's inability to be what it needs to be and to overcome things that have been so difficult, I was able to read this:

For those of you who don't know, I keep up a blog that is intended to help families and individuals called to work with children with autism or other special needs in the church setting. Many of us know (or can only imagine!) how difficult it can be for families with special needs to sit through church meetings. It worries me that many of these families cannot attend church in ways that are always effective for them because of the individual needs that are often difficult to fulfill. So, I am doing my best everyday to help provide more support in this area. Couple things I am looking for:

1. Do any of you have specific stories that illustrate ways to help children in the church setting - both those with and without disabilities? Are there any good resources you know of that may help these families or those called to work with specific kids?

2. Do you know of someone who might benefit from some help? I feel like this is such an important need in the community and I would love to be of service. I have a fireside I can do for leaders, families or others working with these kids. I can attend primaries and give any support. I also keep the blog updated as best I can to help out: errandsofangels.blogspot.com. How can I best help? Any ideas?

Anyway, I would love to collect more resources and more ideas to better support those I love in this realm. Just thought I'd throw the ideas out there and see what people might come up with!

"One night I dreamed—if dream it may be called—that I was in the Garden of Gethsemane, a witness of the Savior’s agony. I saw Him as plainly as I see this congregation. I stood behind a tree in the foreground, where I could see without being seen. Jesus, with Peter, James, and John, came through a little wicket gate at my right. Leaving the three Apostles there, after telling them to kneel and pray, He passed over to the other side, where He also knelt and prayed. It was the same prayer with which we are all familiar: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” ([see] Matthew 26:36–44 [Matt. 26:36–44]; Mark 14:32–41; Luke 22:42).

As He prayed the tears streamed down His face, which was toward me. I was so moved at the sight that I wept also, out of pure sympathy with His great sorrow. My whole heart went out to Him. I loved Him with all my soul and longed to be with Him as I longed for nothing else.

Presently He arose and walked to where the Apostles were kneeling—fast asleep! He shook them gently, awoke them, and in a tone of tender reproach, untinctured by the least suggestion of anger or scolding, asked them if they could not watch with Him one hour. There He was, with the weight of the world’s sin upon His shoulders, with the pangs of every man, woman, and child shooting through His sensitive soul—and they could not watch with Him one poor hour!

Returning to His place, He prayed again and then went back and found them again sleeping. Again He awoke them, admonished them, and returned and prayed as before. Three times this happened, until I was perfectly familiar with His appearance—face, form, and movements. He was of noble stature and of majestic mien—not at all the weak, effeminate being that some painters have portrayed—a very God among men, yet as meek and lowly as a little child.

All at once the circumstance seemed to change, the scene remaining just the same. Instead of before, it was after the Crucifixion, and the Savior, with those three Apostles, now stood together in a group at my left. They were about to depart and ascend into heaven. I could endure it no longer. I ran out from behind the tree, fell at His feet, clasped Him around the knees, and begged Him to take me with Him.

I shall never forget the kind and gentle manner in which He stooped and raised me up and embraced me. It was so vivid, so real, that I felt the very warmth of His bosom against which I rested. Then He said: “No, my son; these have finished their work, and they may go with me, but you must stay and finish yours.” Still I clung to Him. Gazing up into His face—for He was taller than I—I besought Him most earnestly: “Well, promise me that I will come to You at the last.” He smiled sweetly and tenderly and replied: “That will depend entirely upon yourself.” I awoke with a sob in my throat, and it was morning." -Orsen F. If you have not seen this movie yet, you should go see it. It is beautiful and symbolic and hopeful and courageous and uplifting and powerful.

Aslan is my favorite. Naturally.

He helps when you can't do anything more, transforming you back into the person you were meant to be.

And he reminds you of your beauty - your own individual, perfect beauty.

He gives you courage to you fight the evil serpent who battles for your soul.

And he's prepared a magnificent country in which you are Kings and Queens living in peace and glory.

Like I said, if you haven't seen it - go. With all the garbage movies in the world, it's nice to have one that leaves you inspired :)

Angel Unaware

Faith to Get Almonds

One of my friends posted this and I loved it:

"Even when our faith isn't rewarded how we would like, maintaining that faith can still help us live happier lives."

I think this is amazing. What a way to think about it. Often times I think of faith as something that will be sufficiently tried and challenged to prove I really have faith and then rewarded with the thing I wanted most. It's kind of that Marshmallow Test they did with kids where the kids have to wait without eating the mallow and if they did, they got two! But, how often do I wait for the second mallow while watching the first one get destroyed in some very sad way? And then (faithful) I keep on hoping that I'll get two or even three mallows to make up for that horrible, can't-believe-you'd-take-my-mallow-like-that, only-nasty-people-would-mock-you-in-front-of-your-very-face-like-that waiting. And yet, at the end of it, I don't get any mallows. I get almonds instead. Good, but totally not a mallow, right? And yet, in the end the almonds are what make me live long and happy without a sugar headache or a tummy ache and bless me with strength to run, to play, to enjoy my life. Living by faith is never what you'd expect, but definitely the way to live a happier life if we are in tune enough to see the blessings.

Sibling Report: The First Christmas Gift of the Year!

So, Matt and Kristin drew my name this year, which was PERFECT 'cause they knew everything I wanted (the curse of living close to a whiny older sister...) Sadly, they are going to Canada this year for Christmas (weirdos... snow over sunshine?!)... so they brought it over early...

I came home to find this (adorable, isn't it?):

Well, I was just so excited to open it, I just had to breathe a little bit. Kristin made me guess what it was so I sat there and felt it. There was a hard back, but a soft front. I kept thinking it must've been two different things...

...AND THEN IT HIT ME!!!! I KNOW WHAT IT IS!!!! I ripped it open, THRILLED! And WALAH... it's soooo beautiful!!!!

Matt put it right on for me. No more baby pee stained piano bench...

One that fits my house just perfectly. YESSSSSSSSSSSS!

I saw this picture and it reminded me about the true season we are in. I've been busy, stressed, consumed in end of semester projects, both for school and work. I've been trying to attend the parties, the church functions, the choir practices. I've been trying to just manage.

And today, I saw this and thought, "simplify." That's it. I thought, "simplify." No more rushing around. Finals are good enough. I've done the best I can with everything. I can shop - slowly and for fun. You know at the mall, they have these little snowflake lights projected on the ground. Yesterday I stopped and looked at them. I looked stupid, but it made my day. I can go to parties, but they are just to connect, see people. They are to bask in joy. I can be simple. Intimate with those I love. Quiet. Subtle. Soft.

Merry Christmas. Silent Night. Joy to the World.

And, oh, the Christmas Spirit has returned.

I HATE winter.

As many of you know, I am deeply embedded in the world of autism. This morning, I had a parent send this to me and whether I'm emotional or crazy or what, I don't know, but I sat here and cried. What a beautiful depiction of autism. And more than that, how wonderful it is that people are appropriately and factually spreading information, positivity and help about autism throughout the world. Sibling Report

So, every week my family does this thing called "sibling report." We are basically all supposed to email in a little something about our week. The family that's still at home gets reads it during Family Night and they email back for so we all get good updates on our lives. My Mom puts it all in a book and we keep it as sort of a family journal.

Anyway, my siblings have all decided to put it on their blogs each week and I guess I just wanted to follow the trend. Go check their blogs out - to the right in my links under family.

So, here's my first blog sibling report: Tada!

Not much has happened this week, really. It's been cloudy and COOOOOOLD, which we don't love. I got called as the Assistant Ward Music Chair today. I'm still doing Ward Choir (but only through Christmas), playing the piano for Stake Choir (for the Christmas program) and I teach Relief Society. Keeps me busy, but I love it.

I didn't take ANY pictures this week, how sad is that?

Last week, I went to the Clear Horizon's Academy Annual Auction and Gala. YAY! It was wonderful. Went well. Check out what I managed to win:

This is a painting that's hard to see 'cause I took the picture with my phone while it's hanging on my wall. Some people hate it, but I liked it. I thought it was an interesting way to depict autism. Besides, I feel like I do spend all day putting the pieces together for each child I work with and day by day, we're getting there.

This is a painting by James Christensen called "The Widow's Mite." Go read about it in the New Testament. Or HERE. I LOVE it. LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

And last but not least...

No, I didn't get one of these, but kinda. A 7 day stay at a beach house in North Carolina! Steph, MB... HERE I COME! Anyone wanna go in on this? It'll be fun....

I went to the dentist the other day. It was the first time I have been to the dentist in a LOOOOONG time. He hooked me up with happy gas and took care of a few small cavities. It was the most pleasurable experience I have had all week. It was right after work so laying in the chair was relaxing - my feet up and my head cradled in the little pillow. And then when they put the happy gas on my nose, I started to float and fly and relax. I have not been that relaxed - or happy - in weeks. I recommend it for anyone.

I asked the dentist if I could buy some. He told me the government wouldn't allow it. Made me sad.

Seriously... it was the best, most relaxing moment this week. I still can't get over it. Love it.

"Most omissions occur because we fail to get outside ourselves. We are so busy checking on our own temperatures, we do not notice the burning fevers of others even when we can offer them some of the needed remedies, such as encouragement, kindness, and commendation. The hands which hang down and most need to be lifted up belong to those too discouraged even to reach out anymore.

Will we too trust the Lord amid a perplexing trial for which we have no easy explanation? Do we understand—really comprehend—that Jesus knows and understands when we are stressed and perplexed? The complete consecration which effected the Atonement ensured Jesus’ perfect empathy; He felt our very pains and afflictions before we did and knows how to succor us (see Alma 7:11–12; 2 Ne. 9:21). Since the Most Innocent suffered the most, our own cries of “Why?” cannot match His. But we can utter the same submissive word “nevertheless …” (Matt. 26:39).

Sometimes He clearly directs; other times it seems He merely permits some things to happen. Therefore, we will not always understand the role of God’s hand, but we know enough of his heart and mind to be submissive. Thus when we are perplexed and stressed, explanatory help is not always immediately forthcoming, but compensatory help will be. Thus our process of cognition gives way to our personal submission, as we experience those moments when we learn to “be still, and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10).Then, the more one’s will is thus “swallowed up,” the more his afflictions, rather than necessarily being removed, will be “swallowed up in the joy of Christ” (Alma 31:38)."

The Race

A friend of mine gave a talk in church on Sunday and she absolutely brought me to tears when reading this poem. It reminded me of life and inspired me to get up and win the race. I thought I'd share it and hopefully bring some encouragement to someone else.

The Race

"Quit, give up, you're beaten"
They shout at you and plead
"There's just too much against you
This time you can't succeed".

And as I start to hang my head
In front of failures face
My downward fall is broken by
The memory of a race

And hope refills my weakened will
As I recall that scene
Or just the thought of that short race
Rejuvenates my being

Childrens race, young boys
Young men, how I remember well
Excitement sure, but also fear
It wasn't hard to tell

They all lined up so full of hope
Each thought to win that race
Or tie for first, or if not that
At least take second place

The fathers watched from off the side
Each cheering for his son
And each boy hoped to show his dad
That he could be the one

The whistle blew and off they went
Young hearts and hopes afire
To win and be the hero there
Was each young boys desire

And one boy in particular
Whose dad was in the crowd
Was running near the lead and thought
"My dad will be so proud"

But as they speeded down the field
Across a shallow dip
The little boy who thought to win
Lost his step and slipped

Trying hard to catch himself
With hands flew out to brace
And amid the laughter of the crowd
He fell flat on his face

But as he fell his dad stood up

"Get up" the echo sounded low

"Get up", and win the race

With borrowed will "Get up" it said
"You haven't lost at all"
For winning is no more than this
To rise each time you fall

So up he rose to run once more
And with a new commit
He resolved, that win or lose
At least he shouldn't quit

So far behind the others now
The most he'd ever been
Still he'd give it all he had
And run as though to win

Three times he'd fallen, stumbling
Three times he'd rose again
Too far behind to hope to win
He still ran to the end

They cheered the winning runner
As he crossed the line first place
Head high and proud and happy
No falling, no disgrace

But when the fallen youngster
Crossed the line, last place
The crowd gave him the greater cheer
For finishing the race

And even though he came in last
With head bent low, unproud
You would have thought he'd won the race
To listen to the crowd

I love my family.

They are crazy. And silly. And full of an amazing amount of energy.

They are creative and fun. They like to dress up and dance and find ways to create a really exciting adventure using absolutely nothing.

They are happy - genuinely, truly happy.

They love E.L. Fudge cookies and Chinese Chicken Salad. Their new thing is Sausage Pancakes on a stick (sounds disgusting, but don't judge...)

They like to take on really huge projects - like massive sewing endeavors or growing a garden in the Phoenix heat.

They are selfless. They see a need and fill it. They get used, abused and taken advantage of, but they smile and recognize the greater importance of love, peace and Christ-like living.

They like water. Water skiing. Swimming. Rain. Ice water for drinking.

They love the sun. And Maui Babe. And a good book on the Island float.

And more than anything, they love to be together.

I love my family. So much.
